Chapter : 6. Carbon and Its Compound
Alcohols
60. Alcohols : Alcohols are carbon compounds containing –OH group attached to carbon atom. The general formula of alcohol is R–OH where 'R' is an alkyl group and –OH is a functional group. The name of alcohol is derived by replacing – e in the name of alkane from which it is derived by the suffix -ol. For example methanol (CH3OH), an alcohol is derived by substituting 'H' of methane by –OH.
