5. The Coastal Plains of India
On the western and the eastern margins of the Deccan Plateau, stretch the western and the eastern coastal Plains respectively.
1. The Western Coast : It consists of three sections.
(A) Konkan (B) Kannad (D) Malabar
The northern Part of the Western coastal plain in Maharashtra and Karnataka is called Konkan Coast.
The sourthern part of this plain is called the Malabar coast. A large number of back waters called lagoons are found along the Kerala coast. Only few large rivers like the Narmada, Tapi and Mahi flow through it. The plain along the Bay of Bengal are wide and level. In the northern part, it is referred to as the Northern Circar, while the sourthern part is known as the Coromanal Coast. Large rivers such as the Mahanadi, the Godavari the Krishna and the Kaveri have formed extensive delta on this coast. Lake Chilka is an improtant feature along the eastern coast.
