Solution:

Given quadratic equation is x2 + 5x + 4 = 0

Splitting the middle term since 4 + 1 = 5 (Middle Term) & 4 x 1 = 4 (product of coefficient of first and last term). Now

⇒ x2 + 4x + 1x + 4 = 0

⇒ x(x + 4)+ 1(x + 4) = 0

⇒ (x + 4)(x +1) = 0

⇒ (x + 4) = 0 or (x +1) = 0

⇒ x = – 4 or x = -1

Therefore, the roots of a quadratic equation x2 + 5x + 4 = 0 are -4 and -1
